What is a Lifetime Deal?

We get this question a lot: “What does lifetime actually mean? Will I still have this when I’m 95?” Fair question. Here’s the honest answer.

What “lifetime” means

When you buy and redeem a lifetime deal, you get access to the plan you bought for the lifetime of the product. As long as the product is still available, the partner has agreed you’ll have access to it.

“Lifetime” means the product’s lifetime, not yours. If the product shuts down, the deal ends with it.

What’s included in your deal

Your deal is what’s listed in the Deal terms & conditions and plan features on the deal page. That’s what we hold our partners to.

If your Deal terms & conditions include “all future Plan updates,” you’ll also get new features the partner adds to the plan your deal is mapped to.

What about features mentioned in the Q&A or comments?

Partners often talk about upcoming features, roadmap plans, or product updates in the Q&A section, comments, From the Founders posts, or reviews. That’s helpful context, but it’s not part of the deal. Partners may decide to bring those extras to Sumo-ling plans, but they’re only contractually obligated to provide what’s stated in the Deal terms & conditions and plan features.

So if a feature was only mentioned in the Q&A and it never ships, ships later than expected, or lands on a different plan, that isn’t the partner breaking the deal.

Before you buy, make sure the features you need are listed in the Deal terms & conditions or plan table. If a feature you need is only mentioned in the Q&A, don’t count on it as part of your purchase.

What if the product shuts down?

Software companies pivot, get acquired, and sometimes shut down. We pick partners we think have real staying power, but AppSumo is a marketplace. We don’t build these products, and we can’t control what happens on the partner’s side.

Depending on the deal type, deal age, and whether you’re an active AppSumo Plus member, our We Got Your Back guarantee may get you AppSumo credit if a product shuts down. Check that article for what’s covered.

Test it during your refund window

The best thing you can do is redeem and test every product as soon as you buy it. Your refund window is the only time your purchase is 100% protected by our money-back guarantee. Most deals have a 60-day window.

Make sure the product works for you as it is today, not as it might be after a future update. If it does, great. Hang onto it, because in most cases tools keep getting better.
