Understanding Refund Activity on AppSumo
At AppSumo, we offer generous refund policies so customers can try products with confidence. We also operate a marketplace with thousands of customers and partners, which means we need to ensure our refund process stays fair, sustainable, and consistent for everyone.
Like most ecommerce and software platforms, we review refund activity over time as part of managing our marketplace.
This article explains what that means, what you might notice, and why we're sharing this information more proactively.
Is this something new?
No.
Refund activity has always been something we track internally.
What is new is that we're being more transparent and proactive about sharing refund-related education earlier, instead of only surfacing it at later stages. We've heard feedback from customers who were surprised when their refund process changed after extended refund activity, and we realized we weren't giving enough advance notice about how our system works. This help article—and the educational messages you might see during the refund process—are part of making those expectations clearer from the start.
Why does AppSumo review refund activity?
Refunds are an important part of helping customers make confident purchase decisions. At the same time, reviewing refund activity over time helps us:
- Maintain fair access to refunds across our customer base
- Protect partners from repeated misuse of refund policies
- Keep the marketplace healthy and sustainable
This approach isn't unique to AppSumo. Most online marketplaces and ecommerce platforms take refund history into account when processing requests. You may have noticed on platforms like Amazon that refund flows, review steps, or available options can change depending on account history. The same general principle applies here.
What does "refund activity" mean?
Refund activity looks at patterns over time, not individual purchases.
This can include things like:
- How frequently refunds are requested
- How refund requests are spaced out
- Overall refund behavior across an account
For example: if someone purchases 10 products and requests refunds for 8 of them, that creates a very different pattern than someone who purchases 10 products and requests refunds for 1 or 2.
It's not based on a single refund or one specific product.
What might customers notice?
As part of being more transparent, customers may notice:
- Additional messaging or reminders during the refund process
- Educational context about refund usage and purchasing decisions
- In some cases, refunds may require manual review by our Support team rather than being processed instantly
These steps are meant to provide clarity and set expectations, not to single out individual customers.
What this does NOT mean
- This does not change the refund window listed on individual deals
- This does not affect the vast majority of customers
- This is not about one refund or a few refunds
- This is not a judgment of intent or character
- This does not mean refunds are denied—it means some may require review
Most customers don't encounter any additional friction related to refund activity.
How to make confident purchasing decisions on AppSumo
To get the most out of your purchases and refund window, we recommend:
- Reviewing deal terms carefully before buying – Check what's included, any limitations, and integration requirements
- Checking recent reviews and product updates – See what other customers experienced
- Redeeming and testing products early – Don't wait until day 59 of your 60-day window
- Reaching out to the partner directly with product-specific questions – Many partners offer demos or trials
Taking these steps can help ensure the product is a good fit before a refund is needed. You can check out the full article here: How to Buy with Confidence on AppSumo
